Today, having a hard-working dishwasher in your home that cleans all your dishes every day has become a necessity. However, like any other household appliance, even the dishwasher can break down. When your dishwasher stops working, your first instinct is to call a dishwasher service technician. The dishwasher technician will visit your house and service the machine in the shortest possible time. This is a good option, but if you want to save a few bucks, you can try dishwasher repair without getting help from a dishwasher repairman. Here are a few parts that can prevent the dishwasher from starting:
Door Latch Assembly
The assembly is responsible for keeping the machine door closed during the wash cycle. It also includes a latch switch that supplies power to the dishwasher controls. If the machine door is not closed properly, it will not activate the latch switch. Also, if the latch is defective, it will not send power to the machine controls.
The assembly is usually located on the top of the machine door behind the door panel. To check the condition of the assembly, you must remove the screws that connect the inner door panel to the outer body. Most assemblies come with two switches that are wired in a series to improve the safety of the user. Check the condition of the both the switches when inspecting the assembly.
Timer Controls
The next part that you should inspect is the electronic or timer control. The first function of most dishwashers when the cycle is started is to drain the excess water from the machine. If you don’t hear the drain pump running when you start the machine, you should check the condition of the electronic or timer controls. The timer controls supplies power to the following:
- Water inlet valve
- Pump motor
- Heater circuit
- Drain pump.
If you suspect that timer control it is not working properly, you can check its condition using a multi-meter. Make sure you disconnect the power supply to the machine when checking its continuity. Some dishwasher models may display a fault code when the timer is not working. In such situations, all you have to do is to remove the inner door panel and replace the control board that is located behind the control panel.
Selector Switch
This switch is used to select different cycle options such as heated wash and heated dry cycle. If the switch is defective, the dishwasher will not start. Before you check the condition of the switch, make sure that the switch is depressed properly. If it is depressed properly, you must remove the inner door panel of the machine to gain access to the selector switch. Remove the power supply to the machine when checking the condition of the switch using a multi-meter.
Start Relay
The start relay is responsible for supplying power to the motor, which will start winding when the motor is running. The machine will not start unless the power supplied by the control circuit reaches the motor. If the motor does not start, it indicates that the relay could be a problem. The relay is usually located near the motor and you can check its condition using a multi-meter. If the relay is defective, it must be replaced, as it cannot be repaired.
