Dishwasher not filling with water is a common problem faced by most households. There are several factors that can be responsible for this problem. If it is a minor problem, you can fix it without getting any professional help. For major problems, you may have to get help from a qualified dishwasher repairman.
If you plan to repair the dishwasher at home, you must first establish the exact cause of the problem. For instance, you must check if no water is entering the machine or water is not able to enter the machine because there is a blockage. After you have identified the problem, you can start with some simple troubleshooting steps.
Here are common reasons why your home appliance is not filling, the parts that could be responsible for the problem, and some tips to troubleshoot the problem.
No Water in Dishwasher
If there is no water in your residential appliance, the first thing you must check is the water supply to the machine. Check the condition of the water inlet hose and make sure it is connected to the machine without any kinks. Also, make sure that the tap connected to the hose is in open position. If you are unsure about the position of the tap, just turn the tap and check if there is water in the dishwasher. If there is water in the dishwasher, the problem is solved.
These simple troubleshooting steps should solve the problem. However, if you are still facing the same problem, here are the parts that can be responsible for the problem:
Water Inlet Valve
The water inlet valve of the machine is normally located below the door of the machine. The role of the valve is to fill the appliance with water and it is usually controlled by the timer and the float switch. If the valve is faulty, you can easily replace this inexpensive part. Before replacing the valve, you disassemble it and check the valve for any blockage or debris.
Float Switch
The float switch monitors the level of water in the dishwasher. As the machine fills with water, the float rises with increase in water level. When the float reaches a desired level, the float switch is triggered which stops the valve from allowing any more water.
If the float is damaged or is blocked by debris, it will not fall back down when the water drains. As a result, the float switch is not disengaged which prevents the water inlet valve from opening and allowing water to enter the machine.
Other Causes
At times, the inlet valve, water supply, and the float switch may be operating normally but there is still no water in the machine. The other causes of the problem are:
1) If there is a leak in the machine, the anti-flood protection system will get activated, which will prevent the water inlet valve from opening. If you notice water in the base of the machine, it indicates there is leak in the machine.
2) Blocked spray arm could also be responsible for the problem. To troubleshoot this problem, you must remove the spray arm and clean it with a descaler.
3) At times, a problem with the door switch could be responsible for the problem with your machine. When the switch is not functioning properly, the dishwasher will not fill. If you suspect a problem with the door switch, remove the inner panel of the door to gain access to the switch.
If all these steps fail, it is time to call a professional to service the machine. Today, there are many companies that will repair almost any appliance that is not functioning normally. Most companies have gas stove repair technician, dryer service repairman, dishwasher repair professional, refrigerator technician, and washer technician on their rolls. These technicians will visit your house at your convenience and repair the broken appliance in the shortest possible time.
